That ascent on White's Level is a killer. Why on earth they call it level is completely beyond me - it's anything but. It's up, all the way. Sometimes steep. Sometimes very steep. Often rocky.

But once you're at the top, the descent - whichever one you choose - is well worth the agony of the climb.

First loop; Myself, Nigel, Paul & Al did the full White's - without the downhill (black) run. Then, pausing only to fill myself with some unexpectedly heavy ballast at the cafe, I chose to do the whole bloody thing again! Only this time, I managed to do the climb in 8 mins less than last time - though I did miss out all the saddle-tweaking stops.

This time, Neroli, Nigel, Paul, Al & YT decided to take the forest track round to the Skyline trail where we picked up the final, 6km long descent back down to Glycorrwg. Magic.

My HRM tells me I wasted 3599 calories (exactly), and my bike computer tells me I did 29.95km, in 3hrs, 6 mins & 44 secs (of pedalling time), with a moving average speed of 9.6km/hr. Reassuring to know we can measure these things so accurately. Not certain what my GPS thought of it all - It didn't trouble itself to record the trip in it's entirety.
